The Real Culture Bureau 文化號
In 2012, the Hong Kong Government was trying to set up a Cultural Bureau to overlook all arts but the official they were trying to appoint have suspicious Communist ties. This alarmed many artists and cultural workers and they worried the bureau will eventually become a tool of cultural repression. The form of this work comes from the Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) of the People Liberation Army (PLA). The cardboard APC was built on top of a trolley so it can be push easily. The artist dressed up like a Communist government official wearing black Chinese tunic suit, sunglasses and worn red pins, portraying the fictitious role of the ‘Real Cultural Bureau Director’. Equipped with fake money the artist printed himself, he scolded every politician and protestor and trying to bride them into submission. He shouted” I now order all of you to leave immediately! Do not resist! Here is some money, 100 million dollars each! Take it!” Acting out the ridiculous cultural political buy out drama in the streets of protest.
